Lower Saxony's higher-education establishments provide a comprehensive service offering help on everything to do with student life. For example, the International Office (Akademisches Auslandsamt) and Admissions Office (Studentensekretariat) at the establishment of your choice will assist you with all aspects of your study visit: such as which course is right for you, conditions of application, health insurance and looking for accommodation - not only before your course starts, but also during your time in Germany. Staff will also give you useful tips on cultural life and leisure opportunities in Lower Saxony.
The Student Services (Studentenwerke) are there to help students in economic, health, welfare and cultural matters. In particular, they run the refectories and cafeterias, arrange students' accommodation in halls of residence, and deal with matters relating to grants and funding (as covered by the BAfÖG law). Many Studentenwerke also offer advisory services (psychotherapeutic, social-welfare and legal counselling), which are generally free of charge. They also subsidize cultural activities for the student body and run childcare facilities at various locations.
